ICA Polyesters

Polyesters are typically a mix of three components – a basic resin, an accelerator (generally cobalt), and a catalyst (peroxide base). A highly complex cross linking reaction involving a reducer takes place when all three components are mixed. This results in an extremely full bodied film with notable surface hardness. ICA’s unique hybrid, PF5051, combines the extremely high solid content and self-seal properties of the paraffinated polyesters, but without their critical overcoat windows.

Designed for full fill or closed pore finishes, ICA has developed a full range of products including Polyesterino with separate base and top coats. The ICA Polyester range includes clear, pigmented, gloss, matte, and paraffinated finishes that are easy to use and extremely long-lasting.

These results were obtained in our laboratory and are similar to AWI standards as described in the Architectural Woodword Quality Standards of 1997 (Section 1 500-G-7 & G4)

Applications

Since ICA polyesters offers a strong and durable finish, they can be used in high traffic areas where a closed-pore finish is desired. Filling chip board or other materials without putty is also possible and mixed cycles using polyester base coat are common. Whenever a stable and long-lasting full finish is desirable, ICA polyesters can be trusted to provide the best possible finish.

To ensure optimum results, care must to be taken prior to and during the mixing and application processes because they can be more difficult compared to standard coatings.

Our recommendations therefore include:

  • Follow all mixing instructions very closely especially in which order to mix the materials
  • Extreme care should be taken when measuring the U100 catalyst. Over- or under-catalyzation will adversely affect the final result
  • To ensure adhesion in most cases we recommend the prior application of an isolating coat
  • Polyesters are not as flexible as polyurethanes and are therefore not suitable for external use
  • Care must be taken in the storage and handling of A110 and U100 must be used as they are flammable in direct contact
  • Avoid storing in hot conditions and be aware of the shorter pot and shelf life
  • Use only Polyester grade acetone or thinner
  • Ensure a sufficiently large nozzle is used for Polyesterino (typically 2.2 – 2.5mm) or paraffinated polyesters (typically 2.5 – 3mm)

The ICA range of polyesters available in North America includes the hybrid PF5051 series which is ideal for the large high gloss surfaces and Polyesterino series (with separate base and top coat) in clear, black, and white. Paraffinated polyesters are only available on special order with a lead time due to limited shelf life. Other colors are available on request with a lead time.
